Monkeypox Surge: 501 New Cases Reported in August

On September 8, the Chinese mainland reported a significant increase in monkeypox cases for the month of August 2023.

A total of 501 new confirmed cases were reported across various regions.

Here is the breakdown of the cases by province:

  • Guangdong: 95 cases

  • Zhejiang: 77 cases

  • Beijing: 54 cases

  • Sichuan: 54 cases

  • Shanghai: 32 cases

  • Jiangsu: 29 cases

  • Guangxi: 21 cases

  • Tianjin: 13 cases

  • Hunan: 13 cases

  • Henan: 13 cases

  • Chongqing: 12 cases

  • Anhui: 12 cases

  • Yunnan: 11 cases

  • Hubei: 11 cases

  • Shandong: 10 cases

  • Shaanxi: 7 cases

  • Hebei: 7 cases

  • Fujian: 7 cases

  • Heilongjiang: 6 cases

  • Jilin: 5 cases

  • Shanxi: 4 cases

  • Inner Mongolia: 3 cases

  • Liaoning: 2 cases

  • Guizhou: 2 cases

  • Jiangxi: 1 case

It is noteworthy that a staggering 98.9% of the reported cases were male, with only five cases being female.

Global Update

From January 1, 2022, to August 9, 2023, a cumulative total of 89,308 laboratory-confirmed monkeypox cases, including 152 deaths, have been reported worldwide to the WHO (World Health Organization).

Key findings from the WHO include:

  • As of August 9, 2023, 96.3% of cases with available data are male.

  • Skin and mucosal contact during sex has been the most commonly reported mode of transmission since the start of the outbreak.

  • Among cases where at least one symptom is reported, the most common symptom is a rash (present in 90.1% of cases), followed by fever (55.2%), and systemic rash or genital rash (54.0% and 47.6%, respectively).

In light of these developments, it's crucial for individuals to take personal health precautions, especially during the summer months.
