Hacker-Pschorr, one of the most prestigious German breweries, opened the Hacker-Pschorr Wirtshaus Shanghai – a large tap room, brew pub and live music venue all in one – nearly three years ago along the North Bund. The venue takes visitors on a culinary journey by giving them a chance to savor authentic German delicacies while simultaneously enjoying German craft beer on tap, all in a traditional German-style beer house.

This multi-purpose space is the perfect venue for anything from a casual meal with friends to a buffet-catered corporate event. The large beerhall can accommodate up to 300 people indoors, with an expansive outdoor patio overlooking the Huangpu River. The in-house six-person band plays daily from 7-11pm, covering everything from German folk music to modern pop, an eclectic mix that will have you dancing on the beerhall tables as the night progresses.

The Hacker-Pschorr name dates back to the German brewery Hacker, founded in 1417, and Pschorr, which comes from Joseph Pschorr, the purchaser of the Hacker brewery in the late 18th century. In 15 years, he turned the small brewhouse into a beer fortress and one of the top breweries in Munich.

After subsequently founding a second brewery under his own name, he ultimately divided his estate (and two breweries) between his two sons. Finally, in 1972 Hacker and Pschorr merged to form the Hacker-Pschorr brewery we know today.

Using the same recipes that are used in Germany, all Hacker-Pschorr beers that are served onsite in Shanghai are also brewed in the same location, with less than four weeks from fermentation to consumption. This means all beers are unpasteurized, unstrained and naturally cloudy with zero chemicals or preservatives added – essentially as fresh as fresh can be. Prost!

Which tasty brews can you expect to find? From a pleasantly malty, full-bodied Helles to a rich and roasty Dunkel to a fruity and easy drinking Hefe-Wesissbier, there is something for everyone. All three beers on tap come in 0.3 liters (RMB48), 0.5 liters (RMB65), 1 liter (RMB128) and 3 liters (RMB350) for those ready to party all night. Bottled beers, cocktails, wine, spirits, juice, soda, tea and coffee beverages are all on offer to ensure that everyone gets their preferred drink of choice.

The real star of the show is the traditional German food that will knock your lederhosen off. They’ve got all the German favorites – we’re talking schnitzel, beef goulash, spätzle, crispy pork knuckle with sauerkraut, sausages of all shapes and sizes, freshly baked pretzels and apple strudel to end your meal on a sweet note.

The Brotzeit Platte (RMB168), a German-style charcuterie plate for two, comes with a variety of ham, prosciutto, salami, assorted cheeses, olives, pickled gherkins and various dipping sauces to kickstart the heartiest of meals. Pro tip: order it with a basket of their freshly baked assorted breads that arrive tableside warm and fluffy as can be.

Whole roasted pork knuckle the size of a large grapefruit is served on a cutting board tray as the Gegrillte Schweinshaxe (RMB218). With skin as crispy as pork crackling and meat so tender that it just falls off the bone, you won’t want to share even though the serving can easily feed two. The homemade sauerkraut and bread dumplings that come on the side are nothing to shake a stick at either.
