That's right, it's termite season in Shanghai; unfortunately, hot and humid weather is perfect conditions for the pesky insects.

The extreme peak of termite armageddon is due around the plum rain season (which usually starts in June, and is known for its damp, sultry weather) and they will be in the air – and trying to invade houses – until around July.

According to exterminators, the flying pests are most active from noon to 3pm, and feed mainly on dead plants, leaf litter, cellulose, animal dung and wood – which means residents living in Shanghai's old wooden houses will likely get some unwelcome visitors this summer.

Shanghai Housing Management Bureau advises residents to keep indoor areas dry and clean; garbage that attracts termites should be disposed of immediately; and residents should avoid piling items on stairs and in dark corners.

Capable of squeezing through tiny gaps, if your house is getting swarmed, install window screens and try covering cracks in doors and walls with barrier strips.

If that doesn't help, it might be time to call in the exterminators, who use chemicals and sprays to keep the bugs at bay.
