Shanghai sports friends, here we go again. The Camel and That’s Shanghai 9th Annual Sports Awards will take place on February 21. Once a year, we gather to recognize those who have truly made their mark on the city’s amateur sports scene: from the home-run hitters and KO punchers, to those who lift up their mates when all seems lost. They’re our friends, our family and, occasionally, our blood-thirsty rivals.

There are 16 awards across six categories in the general selection, plus three Under 18s categories with 12 awards to be won, with big prizes from F45 and REVO up for grabs. There will also be a raffle fundraiser on the night, with all money raised from that going to the Baobei Foundation.

And now, without further ado, here are the nominations for Coach of the Year (U18):

WISS - Vaughn Stanley

Vaughn Stanley has been a teacher at the Western International School of Shanghai for six years, and all six of those years he has been a member of our WISS Tigers Coaching Staff. Vaughn is a valued member of our Basketball Program, sharing his wealth of knowledge and passion for the game with our Lady Tigers. Each year our Basketball Program has improved and Vaughn is a HUGE part of that improvement. He is the mastermind behind the success story of our WISS Tigers High School Girls Basketball Team.

Football - Mandela Ngueguim

Mandela Ngueguim has been involved in the football development for the youth in Shanghai since 2010. This season was his most challenging since he handles and manages directly five teams at the same time. Despite the difficulties he has tremendous success with the kids. All his teams have developed and improved, coming first in their respective local leagues, as well as becoming champions in all the international competitions they have participated.  Two teams: the U9 Lions and Red Dragons won the Guangzhou tournament, the U12 Strikers became champions in the Shanghai Petreen Cup, the U13 Panthers champions in the Bangkok cup and the U16 AKSIL ReUnited still enjoy the champions trophy of the JSSL Cup in Singapore. Adding to that, all his former teams since 2010 have always got to first position in the in the SIYSL league from 2010 - 2017 and SIYFOL league 2017- 2019, winning countless  international trophies along the way as well. With his years of experience in youth development and his direct approach to the kids, Maandela is well respected by both kids and parents alike.

Youth Basketball, Soccer -  Jeremy Boady

Coach Jeremy focuses on the youngest players - beginners. He not only teaches the basic fundamentals of basketball and soccer but he teaches a love for the sport, team spirit and good sportsmanship.

SUIS - Mr Derek Lee

The Judo squad at SUIS GB has grown year on year, shaping our student athletes into confident young adults. Mr Lee's enthusiasm, knowledge and passion for judo resonate around the entire campus. His students will be the first to tell you how inspirational he is. A severe knee injury last year could have ended Mr Lee's interests, but just like he expects from his students; he trained harder, pushed himself further and got back up with true perseverance.

Active Kidz Soccer Director - Isaac Asare

Isaac is the current Soccer Director of AKS, leading Shanghai’s top soccer program that trains over 1000 youth soccer players each year. Isaac is the current coach of the AKSIL competitive U9/U10/U12/U14 teams. Along with winning the championship for SIYFOL Division A U9, U10 and U14, Isaac also manages over 500 players in AKS’ recreational trainings and internal Sunday Soccer League in Puxi and Pudong. In 2018, Isaac was invited by Adidas to share his coaching expertise in various events in Shanghai, including the Republic of Sports in Xintiandi.
