Remember the illuminated zebra crossings in the Wujiaochang area that we reported on back in February? Well, additional intersections around town have recently followed suit.
During the recent National Day holiday, tourists and residents who visited the Bund found the Nanjing Dong Lu and Zhongshan Dongyi Lu intersection gleaming with red and green lights.

According to Shine, the luminous crossings belong to the latest jaywalking detection system employed by the Shanghai police. The system includes a lighting system along the crosswalk and columns on both sides of the road, which aim to encourage road safety.
The LED strips on the road are as hard as steel plates. They turn red when the traffic light turns red and green when the traffic light turns green. Apart from preventing pedestrians from jaywalking, it also reminds motorists to slow down for civilians at night.

The columns at both sides of the street consist of an array of detectors and cameras. If a pedestrian fails to follow the instruction and crosses the road when the light is red, the column will take photos of the jaywalker. These photos are subsequently sent to the police, and the offender will incur a fine of RMB50 (USD7.20).

The system has been installed at 10 intersections across the city, including the Bund, National Exhibition and Convention Center and Gaodong Town of Pudong.
According to the Shanghai Police, additional zebra crossings will be introduced to more intersections in the near future.
