As we reported earlier this week, the city has entered a period of scorching heat and torrential rain. After the first orange heat alert of July was released by local authorities yesterday, Kankanews reports that a second heat alert was issued today, along with three other alerts for gale, rainstorm and lightening.

The orange alert for heat was activated by the Shanghai Meterological Bureau at 9.18am this morning. The mercury reading could surpass 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in most districts in Shanghai.

This is Shanghai’s third orange heat alert of summer 2018. Yesterday turned out to be  the hottest day of the year, as mercury reached 37.7 degrees Celsius (99.9 degrees Fahrenheit). It remains to be seen whether the record will be broken today.

When the orange alert (the second in the three-tier alarm system) is triggered, those in Shanghai are advised to avoid outdoor activities in the afternoon. Meanwhile, children, the elderly along with those who need to work outdoors for extended durations are reminded to take necessary precautions in light of the heatwave.

Apart from extremely hot weather, gale and thunderstorms joined the riot today as well. In the afternoon, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau released yellow alerts for lightening, rain storm and gale. In Minhang District, the rain storm alert even reached the orange level.

All alerts appeared on local TV channel around afternoon.

It gets worse: the temperature will likely hover around 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) until early August. However, the incoming thunderstorms may ease the heat, according to a forecast by The Weather Channel

Fingers crossed.
