Thanks to the annual plum rain season, Shanghai is temporarily shielded from the high temperatures of summer. Nevertheless, this humid season may soon come to an end with as scorching weather is set to make a comeback next week, Shine reports.

On the evening of July 1, we were lucky enough to witness the glorious city skyline as it turned into a glowing pink. While the dreamlike scenery provided an excellent opportunity for photographers, a unique weather phenomenon can take the credit.

“The stunning sunset was a collaboration of the sun and a sufficient amount of vapor,” advised an employee from the Shanghai Weather Bureau to Eastday. “Due to the afternoon thunderstorms, the air was moistened. The water drops in the air backscattered the red sunlight, hence this visual phenomenon. We also refer to it as ‘the burning clouds.’”

The Shanghai Weather Bureau continues to forecast scattered thunderstorms this week, and the temperatures will hover around 30 degrees Celsius. That being said, as the subtropical ridge continues to move north, the city may bid farewell to the plum rain season for 2018.

Next week, the mercury is predicted to climb again, according to The Weather Channel. Chances are by then the genuine hot days of summer will arrive. Last year, the plum rain season ended on July 5, according to Kankanews.
