It's back! After a three-year hiatus, multiple airlines announced on June 5 that they would be resuming fuel surcharges, adding RMB10 to ticket fees for every adult passenger.
China Daily reports that rising fuel costs and high international oil prices are the reason for the fee's return.
The 10 carriers which will be reinstating the fee are Air China, China United Airlines, Ok Air, Kunming Airlines, LJ air, Juneyao Air and Spring Airlines.
Since 2015, when fuel surcharges were initially stopped, the price of fuel for surcharges to be permitted on domestic flights has risen from RMB4,140 per metric ton to RMB5,000 per ton, according to the National Development and Reform Commission and the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).
Earlier this year, CAAC also gave state-owned airlines more control over ticket pricing.
