A Fudan University postgraduate medical student on trial for murdering his roommate by poisoning his drinking water has told a Shanghai court that he never intended anything more than a prank.
Lin Senhao told the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court that he laced Huang Yang's drinking water with N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) after Huang announced his own plans to trick someone on April Fool's Day. He said he thought Huang was self-righteous and wanted to give him a taste of his own medicine.
Prosecutors argued that Lin knew full well that the amount of NDMA he added to the water could be deadly, and that he killed Huang because he resented his roommate over "trivial daily matters".
Lin has published several articles on the effects of NDMA, including measure lethal volumes in mice (the chemical is used to simulate liver disease in rodents for testing). Lin put at least 30 grams (1.05 oz) of the chemical in the water dispenser, 10 times the fatal dose for a man of Huang's size.
An investigation of Lin's laptop also fonud that he had searched online for murder cases involving poisoning.
The court is expected to issue a ruling in the near future.
