That's Shanghai takes a look at the best art exhibitions of the month:
Christmas Island, Naturally
Existing within a space somewhere between reality and fantasy, Robert Zhao Renhui's Christmas Island, Naturally presents the Singaporean artist's take on the many facets behind the relationship between humans and animals. Originally commissioned for the 2016 Sydney Biennale, this is the first time this series will be exhibited in China.
Until Nov 19, ShanghArt Gallery.
Collective Individualism IV
Examined in Collective Individualism IV is the Jung-developed concept of the collective unconscious - a shared history, experience and behavior as human beings - where 11 artists' recent works will be analysed on show under this school of thought, noting the simularities and contrasts between their creations.
Until Oct 23. AroundSpace.
MUSE: Zhang Haier
Collecting familiar as well as unseen works, MUSE showcases a career-spanning plethora of Zhang Haier's photography which largely details the female form - namely his wife, Hu Yuanli. Often the muse from which the exhibition's title derives (although not solely), selected photographs explore the couples' experiments with portraiture as well as the female figure and its subjects' femininity.
Until Oct 29. Shanghai Center of Photography.
Still Moving
From September 9, the first ever showing in Asia by acclaimed British sculptor Antony Gormley takes place at the Long Museum. Centering around Critical Mass II, the collection finds 60 life-sized iron body casts in various framings that interogates each body as a conduit of our deepest thoughts, feelings, dreams, fears and other characteristics that make us human.
Until Nov 26. Long Museum.
Studio
Offering an insight into the working conditions of 12 of China's most prominent contemporary artists, this exhibition presents the studios of each of these creators, allowing a glimpse at the working environments which house these innovators.
Until Oct 21. Qiao Space.
PSA Collection Series: Li Chan
Combining his love of art and bio-science, Li Shan's work explores the equality and uniformity between different life forms and species. Collected in this exhibit are plans, sketches, drawings and documents as well as two pieces on display which feature two living organisms!
Until Nov 26. Power Station of Art.
