Organizers have released dates and some event info for ShanghaiPRIDE, the volunteer-run festival that earned a love letter from Ian McKellen and has been painting the town rainbow every June for the past nine years.
Though traditionally a week long, the 2017 festival has been condensed to three days (June 15-18), but a rich line-up of pre- and post- Pride events can essentially keep you reveling from now to July.
Many of the festival's classic events are returning this year, including Pride's Got Talent (coming up on April 22), the Rainbow Bike Ride (May 20), the Ladies Party (June 15), the Pride Run (June 17) and ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival (June 11-18), which is accepting submissions for its short film contest until April 15. A notable new event this year is Pride Rocks (June 16), a concert featuring local bands.
ShanghaiPRIDE always has a theme, and it's usually an empowering concept open to multiple interpretations; last year's theme was "I am me" and promoted self-acceptance. For 2017, the theme is "The time is now..." According to the organizers, "It’s time to love fearlessly, to live open lives, to stand with our community, to champion acceptance and beat back intolerance. What will you do now to shape our tomorrow?"
