On September 29, Shanghai lost local legend and performer Meachie Day.

The six-year-long expat of Shanghai performed at some of the city's top venues: Brown Sugar, JZ Club, The Melting Pot and more.

This Wednesday (Nov 2) a memorial concert will be held at On Stage to remember Meachie, as well as to raise money for his family. Ahead of the concert, we've collected stories and tributes for Meachie from Shanghai's music community.

Kevin Maxim:

"I had heard about Meachie from different musicians, and I think we may have already been WeChat friends before we met for the first time, which was backstage at the Sennheiser Shanghai Concert Hall a couple of years ago, just after the tribute EncoreLive produced honoring the musical legacies of Whitney Houston and James Brown. I believe he was living in Beijing at the time and came down to Shanghai just to support the show. I hadn't heard him song yet, but I was definitely anxious to hear what everyone had been raving about.

My second time meeting Machine was legendary! I was touring China with the cast of The Sound of Music, and we had just arrived in Beijing from Qingdao. Some members of the cast had been asking about things to do, since they had finally gotten over the jet lag. I knew Meachie was in Beijing. So, I reached out to him, and he said he would be performing at CJW. I took 10 to 15 members of production to see him. It was my first time hearing him sing, and he had one of those voices....one of those voices that makes you scream random profanities from the back of a room or grab something and shake it in a desperate attempt not to throw it. Not only was he vocally awesome, but he invited me up sing, the band did a special impromptu tribute to the cast of Sound of Music, and we danced and sang the entire night."

Ruby:

"Meachie Day always improvised his feeling and love in every song he did; he had such a big heart. He was a great performer, entertainer and musician."

Smokey:

"He was a soldier in the army of music!"

Tambora and Shepard:

"Brother Meachie, You are truly gonna' be missed, never will forget your ANOINTED  SANGIN!! You in OUR lives was "A GLIMPSE Of PARADISE"."

Denise Mininfield:

"To my brother Meachie you are truly one of a kind. I love you and I miss you. You always bought love and peace in my life."

Elmelson Alvarado:

"Thank you for everything Meachie, always going to remember all those moments in Beijing... today you are in the sky, but you always will be present in our heart... I will miss you Papi."

Keni Michael:

"I remember Meachie when he was a member of Next Movement out of Las Vegas. I sat in and performed with Next Movement when he was there before he left the group and headed out to China."

Carlton J. Smith:

"Brother Meachie! It was always a pleasure sharing a stage with you. MAY GOD BLESS AND KEEP YOU. Love and respect always."

Wink:

"My Brother Meachie was a wonderful soul and blessed with soulfulness! It was "My Honor" to have shared the stage with him! Love into the Next Stage!"

Byron Hill:

"Meachie was the Brother I never had. R.I.P. Big Brother. So many memories we created! I will cherish them always! Until we meet on the other side. Miss you dearly brotha!"

Kenny Leonore:

"Meachie, my big brother, my mentor, a great man of wisdom, best singer I ever worked with. I love you bro! Until we meet again to celebrate birthdays and get all of them drunk over there. Where is your glass Meachie, like we used to say....Who would know that?"

Cherry Brown:

"My brother Meach, it was a pleasure gracing the stage with you. Your light will forever shine. Love you always, your 'baby sis'."
