The Shanghai Sea Dragons will be hosting their 3rd annual Shanghai Beach Water Polo Tournament this Saturday, June 18. The aim and purpose of the tournament is to enable athletes from all over the world to gather together, have fun, and promote beach water polo in Shanghai and Asia. There will be a wide range of ages and experience levels, with over a dozen nationalities represented.
Beach Water Polo rules differ from standard water polo play. Teams consist of four players in the pool, with rosters of 7 players allowed. Best of three games in each match (a win is counted when one of the teams reaches 5 goals or has the most goals in each 6 minute game).
The goalkeeper puts the ball in play immediately after a goal is scored. However, once a game point is reached, the re-start is from the center court with teams lined up on opposing ends of the pitch. Kicking, hitting, bad language or any other attempts at unsportsmanlike foul play are prohibited and will result in a red card – leading to expulsion from the immediate game and all remaining games in the match, with substitution permitted.
Come watch teams hailing from Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Dongguan, Hungary and Guam duke it out in the water in thrilling games of beach water polo!
June 18, 8am-5pm, Oriental Sports Center (Outdoor Pool). See event listing here.
