A recurring look at what's happening at Shanghai's art galleries:

1. Yan Heng: Frequency Modulation

1. Yan Heng: Frequency Modulation

The Beijing artist has his second solo exhibition at Arario Gallery. Yan is known for his figurative painting that he subverts with subject matter examining the relationship between scientific technology and humanity. Opens on May 13 at 5pm.
May 13-June 24. Arario Gallery.

2. Liu Chengrui: Pagan

Liu Chengrui: Pagan

The Beijing based performance artist has exhibited at the Venice Biennale and has won awards from his bold works. After last year's Into the Sun (pictured above), he debuts his latest performance piece at MadeIn Gallery: a week-long “pagan” pilgrimage. Using a setting of an oval green pool, Liu wil perform from noon to 5.30pm with the help of red, orange, yellow, green, black, blue and violet balls. Opens on May 14 at 2pm.
May 14-20. MadeIn Gallery, 4/F, Bldg 7, 50, Moganshan Lu, by Xi Suzhou Lu, 莫干山路50号7号楼4楼 (6070 9563)

3. Ying Yefu: The Empty Space Between Hope and Despair

Ying Yefu: The Empty Space Between Hope and Despair

The Wuxi-born, Xi’an based artist is an Art Labor favorite thanks to his bold ink paintings. For his sixth solo exhibition at the Yongjia Lu gallery, Ying is showing off his latest works. However, unlike his past shows that dazzled with their detail, The Empty Space Between Hope and Despair plays with starkness and limited colors. Opens on May 14 from 6-9pm.
May 14-June 15. Art Labor.

4. Zhang Qing: Boundary

Zhang Qing: Boundary

The always exciting ShanghART Gallery hosts the latest solo exhibition by experimental artist Zhang Qing. Boundary continues Zhang’s fixation with surveillance art with video works that explore the psychological relationship between observer and observed. Pieces range from the silly ‘Don’t be too bizarre’ to more intense works like ‘886 Boylston Street, Boston MA’ which uses footage from the same surveillance cameras used to identify the Boston Marathon bombers. Opens on May 13 from 4-6pm.
May 14-July 3. ShanghART H-Space.

5. Animamix Biennale 2015-2016: Space in Mind

5. Animamix Biennale 2015-2016: Space in Mind

Chair professor of City University of Hong Kong’s School of Creative Media, Media Art department, Jeffrey Shaw, curates this edition of the biennale celebration of animation that will tour the world. 13 international artists participate with this year’s focus on works that guide viewers to engaging in new knowledge. Site-specific works fill out MoCA’s first floor, while the second floor will host animated short screenings from around the world: China (May 14-31), France (June 1-15), Poland (June 16-July 1), Germany (July 2-3) and Japan (July 4-17). Kids will get a kick out of the third floor which has been transformed into a children’s animation playground called Park BOOMi created by Trevor Lai (see cover image).
May 14-July 17. MoCA.

6. Two Magnum Masters - Barbey, Berry

Two Magnum Masters: Barbey, Berry

Down in the West Bund, the Shanghai Centre of Photography hosts this exhibition celebrating respected photographers Ian Berry and Bruno Barbey of the legendary Magnum collective. For this show, the artists present iconic images from their broader career from Berry’s work in South Africa in 1960 to Bruno Barbey’s images from his travels around the world like the above shot of 1968 Paris.
Until May 29. Shanghai Centre of Photography, 2555 Longteng Avenue, by Fenggu Lu 龙腾达到2555号, 近丰谷路 (6428 9516, info@ scop-sh.com)
