A recurring look at what's happening at Shanghai's art galleries:
1. Daily Formalism
For their first group show of the year, the dark side of the Bund located BANK hosts this exhibition featuring super stars like Ai Weiwei (see above), Haegue Yang, Evan Roberts and more. Formalism explores the idea of form over meaning in art across a variety of works spanning multiple mediums. Opens on March 18 from 5-7pm.

2. Huang Yongping: Baton Serpent III - Spur Track II
As co-founder of the 80s art collective Xiamen Dada, Huang Yongping has established himself as a giant in the Mainland art scene. Power Station of Art pays tribute to the Fujian-born artist with this major retrospective of a stellar career that includes some of his famed large-scale installations like Baton Serpent III (pictured above).

3. Zhao Yang: Zao
The Jilin-born artist takes over ShanghART’s two m50 spaces showcases over 30 of his latest paintings that mixes a magical surrealist style with a deep philosophical humanity. Opens on March 18 from 4-7pm.

4. Zhang Jianjun: Water ∙ Quintessence
It’s been nearly 30 years, but Zhang Jian-Jun returns to his hometown for this solo exhibition celebrating his career. Archival footage of the Chinese abstract art pioneer’s past art installations and performances will complement Zhang’s latest sculpture works, oil and ink paintings that explore classical Chinese philosophy.

5. Olafur Eliasson: Nothingness is Not Nothing At All
World renowned Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson gets feted at this career-spanning exhibition at Long Museum West Bund. Commissioned pieces like the site-specific ‘The Open Pyramid’ will make their world debut during the show, while Eliasson’s past classics in installations, sculptures, paintings, drawings and film will also be displayed.

6. Alberto Giacometti Retrospective
Following the smashing success of Rain Room, Budi Tek's Yuz Museum will host this immense retrospective exhibition devoted to one of the 20th century's greatest sculptors. Regarded as a modernist master, Giacometti had a profound impact on post-war art, earning the moniker of 'the artist of artists.' 250 masterpieces created from 1917 to 1966 will be on display.
