Jan 20: Painkiller Fest 2016
A trio of metal standouts converge on China to bring the pain to Shanghai and Beijing. Straight out of Finland, Finntroll (pictured above) specializes in epic Viking metal. Arkona are standouts in Moscow’s pagan metal scene, while the rising Shandong group Spirit Dream have been winning awards for their mix of metal and traditional culture.

Jan 20: Career Suicide
Known as the launching pad for beloved hardcore act Fucked Up, the Canadian group makes their Shanghai debut, bringing their fierce sound to Yuyintang. Perfect for fans of early 80s hardcore.

Jan 21: Zhang Le
The internationally renowned singer and composer has been praised by Academy Award winning composer Tan Dun. She’s heavily collaborated with the acclaimed Shanghai Restoration Project and will be bringing her smoky jazzy take on classic Chinese songs to the intimate confines of Heyday.

Jan 22: Hesher Has Culture
It’s the second edition of this new punk night that brings together staples of Shanghai’s music scene like city institutions Loudspeaker, hardcore act Spill Your Guts and the young punk of rebel rousers Dirty Fingers.

Jan 22-23: Riccardo Muti & The Chicago Symphony Orchestra
The music director of the world-renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra takes over Shanghai Oriental Art Center for a performance of classics from the likes of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev.

All For Nothing
For over a decade, the Holland group has built up a reputation as one of Europe’s most influential female hardcore band. They’re traveling across the Mainland and bring their China tour to Yuyintang.

Denise Minnifield and Nom
Two of the city’s hardest working singers team up for an enchanting night. Denise Minnifield has been bringing her soulful take of R&B across the city’s venues, while Nom is a Cotton Club legend in the making.

The Emerson Quartet
For over four decades, this ensemble has won wide praise around the world for their performances of classics by the likes of Schubert and Dvorak.

Jorge Montiel
The Latin funk icon has been finetuning his soulful sounds since forming The Smoke Brothers soundsystem as an 18-year-old in Venezuela. He’s since cofounded the notorious Los Charly’s Orchestra and collaborated with the likes of Soul II Soul’s Jazzy B on a myriad of projects. Montiel brings his mix of soul, disco and Latin funk back to Unico, which he memorably blessed with a scintillating opening night set.

Wu Jian
Expect the wenqing to be out in droves at MAO Livehouse as the lovely singer-songwriter leads a stacked bill of domestic troubadors. Head there if you’re needing your urban folk fix

Hazel Gould & Gilbert Kuppusami
Best known for his role in Noukilla and Studio 188, Kuppusami teams up with UK born Hazel Gould for a night veering towards old school soul and funk.

JZ Big Band Conducted by Alec Haavik
