Dec 14-16: Yi Café presents Malaysian Week

Malaysian Food Festival @ Yi CafeThe lively flavors of Malaysia will be celebrated at the Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai favorite. Chef Saberansa Bilini will visit from the Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah to deliver authentic Malaysian dishes like chicken curry with potato, lamb kuzzie, rojaj buah, bubur kacang hijauh and much more.

Dec 14-26: 12 Days of X-Mas

The Jingan branch of the Rooster kick off their 12 Days of Christmas, starting with half-prize of all appetizers from kimchi pulled pork fries to chicken & veggie spring rolls on December 14. Check out all the deals here.

The acclaimed Hong Kong cellist performs a solo recital at Shanghai Concert Hall.

Dec 17: How Prepared is Shanghai to Tackle Climate Change?

Green Drinks hosts this talk about climate change in Shanghai and the challenges faced to implement innovations. A range of topics will be discussed just days after the historic climate bill was signed in Paris.

Her

8 Art Hotel presents Spike Jonze’s Academy Award nominated film in the latest of their Movie and Wine nights. The 2014 hit was partially filmed in Shanghai and follows a lonely man who becomes drawn to the voice of the world’s first artifically intelligent operating system. Joacquin Phoenix stars and Scarlett Johansson voices in this unlikely romance. A special menu will be available and space is available by reservation.

Dec 17: Bingo Night Fever

Mr and Mrs Bund Bingo Night Fever

Mr & Mrs Bund’s monthly late night bingo session will feature Christmas goodies plus the customary amazing prizes, which include a GoPro Hero 4, Park Hyatt vouchers, XBox Ones and more. One binbo board to any table having late night dinner, with menus startng from RMB250.

Dec 18: Mojin - The Lost LegendMojinThe Mainland’s most successful online novel gets a big-budget film adaption starring Chen Kun (Painted Skin), Huang Bo (Lost in Thailand), Shu Qi (The Assassin) and Angelababy. Described as “China’s Tomb Raider,” the 1980s set film follows two grave robbers seeking hidden treasure across the country’s ancient mythical sites.

Santa Claus Party

The Camel hosts Popin’s Santa Claus Party. RMB100-110 admission gets you two glasses of hot wine, Christmas cocktails or beers, mince pies and sancks, a cast-off exchange and a chance to play the Christmas quiz.

Inspired by Magic Mike, Urban Aphrodite is giving an early Christmas gift to all the ladies in the city. International hunks will dance for your entertainment, while lap dances are available for those who dare to dream.

Dec 18: múmDec18-MUM.jpgOne of Iceland’s most enduring musical exports, múm have a distinct sound that could only be born on the Nordic island. Like Björk, they mix electronic beats with an assortment of instruments while crafting a beatific childlike sound reminiscent of Sigur Rós. Taking a break from recording their seventh album, the acclaimed group will be embarking on their first Chinese tour, stopping off at MAO Livehouse. For more, check out our interview with múm

Dec 18: Chinese FootballChinese FootballThe Wuhan emo quartet specialize in wistful guitar driven indie-rock in the vein of genre standouts like Jimmy Eat World, The Get Up Kids, Death Cab for Cutie and American Football. Dec 18: Earth Beats featuring Kaoru Inoue

Kaoru Inoue

The acclaimed DJ and producer is known for a unique sound that incorporates influenes ranging from jazz and Afrobeat to techno and house. He’ll be making the trip from Japan to On Stage, with support from Lindberg, Kenanjun and KayTV.

Dec 18: Alex Barck (Jazzanova)

Alex BarckThe Jazzanova DJ has been a trendsetting DJ for over twenty years, wowing crowds with a mix of jazz, soul, reggae, disco and house. He’ll be supported by China underground electronic pioneer Ben Huang performing with saxophonist Quentin.

Dec 18-19: Rhythm of the Dance Rhythm of the DanceThe National Dance Company of Ireland presents this two-hour dance and musical extravaganza. The inspiring epic mixes modern dance and music with rich costumes that marry the contemporary and the ancient. Relive the journey of Irish Celts through history in one of the world’s most popular Irish step dance shows.

Dec 18-20: The 2nd Shanghai Baroque Festival

Alice Cotte

The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (SSO) hosts the second edition of this three-day baroque festival. Day one features Handel’s Alcina. Day two features soprano Gu Wenmeng performing a mixed programme of classics from Bach and Mozart. Things cap off with British mezzo-soprano Alice Coote performing Handel and other traditional favorites.

Dec 18-23: The Fire of Anatolia Fire of AnatoliaIn 1999 Mustafa Erdoğan began working on the Turkish answer to Riverdance. Since its 2001 debut, The Fire of Anatolia has enjoyed global success akin to the Irish classic. The show successfully incorporates hundreds of folk dances and music from the ancient region and has been staged in front of the Egyptian pyramids, opened the lavish CCTV New Year Gala, set world records and impressed über-stars like Britney and Celine. Dec 18-27: The Five Fools The Five FoolsThis children’s musical has been praised by the New York Times as a “lesson in the power of civility.” The show follows a circus full of colorful characters from the love-struck strongman to the “bad” ringmaster. Despite their hang-ups, they manage to conquer their fears in a touching story that will have the whole family enraptured. The show features live music, acrobatics, illusion and ample amounts of comedy. The bilingual show mixes English and Chinese, creating an environment that encourages language learning for the kids.

Dec 19: Jiashan Christmas Market

Jiashan Market

The popular community market gets a Christmas makeover. Amelia’s offering mulled spices, The British Kitchen will be serving up holiday treats (plus their trademark mince pies and puddings), Santa will be making artisinal coffee with roasters Jonas Emil and Shanghia Young Bakers will be doing cooking decorations.

Dec 19: Nexxus ShanghaiNexxusThis indoor EDM megafest boasts a strong bill that mixes legends (Paul Oakenfold) with ascending stars (KSHMR) and respected names (Normon Doray, DJ Falcon). Hometown favorites like the Busy Gang will perform, but what has us most excited is a rare live collaboration between world music star Sa Dingding and Shanghai bass lord Conrank who previously worked together on Sa’s excellent 2014 remix album, Wonderland. Dec 19: Super Junior K.R.Y.

Super Junior KRY

The first official sub-group of the South Korean boy band monoliths Super Junior are closing in on their 10th anniversary. The trio features Super Junior’s main vocalists Yesung, Ryeowook and Kyuhyun. They’re bringing their Asia tour to Shanghai Gymnasium.

Dec 19: Shanghai Indie: Various Forms

Air Walker

On Stage is hosting a pair of Shanghai indie nights in the next couple weeks. In the first edition, shoegazers Air Walker make their return to the stage with a modern dance collaboration that will also be simultaneously streamed online. Dream Can, Salome and The Joy Shop round out the bill.

Dec 19: Star Wars Episode X: The Force Blacks Out! Dec19-StarWarsrocks.jpgThis rocking celebration revels in Star Wars nerdery. Six of the city’s top groups will do battle on stage in full Star Wars regalia, playing everything from surf to hip hop to metal. The Psyders, blue Magpie and members of Round Eye will take part, while DJ BO spins Star Wars themed insanity. Dress up for a chance to win the Prize for Best Costume. Rumor has it that the reclusive Yoda will make an appearance.

Dec 19: Jazz speaks Cantonese Dec19-JazzSpeaksCantonese.jpgJZ Club favorites Jonas Seetoh (pictured above), Jade Lee, Erica Lee, Joey Lu and Eaven Chen have come together to record classic jazz covers with a Cantonese twist. They’ll team up with an all-star band of JZ musicians for a concert to celebrate the physical release of the Jazz Speaks Cantonese album. Until Dec 20: Sebastião Salgado - Genesis The iconic photojournalist’s massive show features 245 original works. Over eight years, Salgado traveled through 32 different countries, as far south as Antarctica where he documented chinstrap penguins, and as far north as Siberia, where he trekked alongside the indigenous Nenet people.
