Directed by Arantxa Etxevarría, Chinas is being screened as part of the series "New Spanish Cinema: 7 Films / 6 Female Directors." The film follows Lucía, Xiang, and Claudia—three girls of Chinese origin living in Madrid, each with vastly different lives. Their stories intertwine and diverge, but they all share a common thread: the search for their own identity.
Two of the girls—Lucía and Xiang—are both nine years old. Lucía is the daughter of Chinese immigrants, while Xiang is an adopted child struggling to understand who she is. Claudia, a teenager and Lucía’s older sister, is the most affected by racism and the cultural clash she experiences at school.
Chinas is inspired by Etxevarría’s real-life encounters with a young Asian girl and the conversations they shared in the girl’s parents' shop. Following the screening, the director will join the audience for a discussion, accompanied by the film’s producer and director of photography, Pilar Sánchez Díaz.
