First built in 242 AD, this Buddhist temple dedicated to the Maitreya Buddha is one of the largest and oldest of its kind in Shanghai. Several historical monuments are located within this 20,000-square-meter complex, including the seven-story Longhua Pagoda. The temple was damaged, and subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The latest restoration was carried out in 1954 and follows the architectural design style of the Song dynasty.
