Nov 3-11: When All Was Green

A puppetry show by Israel’s Key Theatre, When All Was Green is the story of a boy and a tree, and about fields lost between gray concrete and one green bud of hope. Key Theatre is composed of a puppet-loving husband-wife duo, both experts at scriptwriting and performing. The pair has toured the world with their memorable and artistic puppet shows, inspiring curiosity in countless children around the globe.

Nov 6-10: Culinary Delights by Michelin-Honored Chef

Chef Stefano Baiocco, from Michelin two-star restaurant Villa Feltrinelli, wowed diners at Ebony last year with his unique gastronomic creations. This month, the renowned Italian chef returns to Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou to present Guangzhou food lovers with a range of new culinary delights including raw langoustines scented with citrus fruit rind, cherry tomatoes and green apple sauce, as well as lamb filet braised in olive oil, butter and aromatic herbs with almond cream and roasted pepper jus. Both dishes are available on Ebony’s nine-course dinner menus from November 6 to 10. A semi-buffet lunch with a Michelin-star main course is also on offer.

Nov 9-10: Sense and Sensibility by Chapterhouse Theatre

Founded in 1999, Chapterhouse Theatre Company performs under the stars at some of the most beautiful gardens the United Kingdom has to offer. The renowned theater troupe will bring one of Jane Austen’s all-time classics, Sense and Sensibility, to the stage at Xinghai Concert Hall this month, offering Guangzhouers a story of love, romance and heartbreak.

Nov 11-30: World War I – Far Away from Home Exhibition

This 20th century wartime exhibition will display old photographs of soldiers from different countries and ethnic backgrounds who fought in the Great War. The pictures capture the turbulent times during WWI, a conflict that saw hundreds of thousands of soldiers fight and perish on the Western Front, in the Belgian province of West Flanders.

Nov 15: Beaujolais Nouveau 2018

Good news for wine lovers! It’s Beaujolais Nouveau season once more, and the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Canton, in partnership with the Consulate General of France in Canton, is going to celebrate the arrival of this year’s grape harvest with a fun, wine-centric event. Nov 16: Art Canton – Contemporary Art Fair

For their eight-year anniversary, Art Canton, a large-scale art fair widely recognized by collectors and academia, will be held at Guangzhou Liuhua Exhibition & Trade Center. This year, more than 60 art institutions, galleries and over 100 artists from China and other countries will participate in Art Canton – Contemporary Art Fair, where visitors can expect a visual feast of artworks representing the creme de la creme of contemporary art circles.

Nov 16-25: Mamma Mia!

Over 60 million people worldwide have fallen in love with the characters, the story and the music that make Mamma Mia! the ultimate feel-good show. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past to a Greek island paradise, where stories unfold. The Chinese version maintains the original flavor of playwright Catherine Johnson’s work, reinterpreting more than 20 ABBA songs in Chinese.

Nov 17: 2018 AmCham Winter Ball – A Journey Through Time

It’s that time of the year again, folks, time for one of Guangzhou’s most celebrated and highly-anticipated annual events: AmCham Winter Ball. This year’s ball shares a theme with one of our favorite ’80s films, Back to the Future (shout out to Doc and Marty!), promising to whisk guests through time! Dubbed ‘AmCham Winter Ball 2018: A Journey Through Time’ by the organizer, AmCham is planning to transport attendees through the ages using the magic of music and dance, from romantic 17th century Italian balletto and the innovative waltz of 18th century Europe to the modern dance genres we enjoy today (get ready to pop ‘n’ lock, people!).

Nov 17: Kenny G

The iconic Kenny G is coming to Guangzhou this month. The Grammy Award-winning smooth jazz saxophonist from Seattle is the highest-selling instrumental musician of our time, with global sales of his albums reaching more than 75 million in total. Back in 1986, Mr. G achieved tremendous success with his fourth album, Duotones. In China, Kenny G’s romantic style is loved by audiences, especially for his rendition of household Chinese songs ‘Jasmine Flower’ and ‘The Moon Represents My Heart’ as well as signature piece ‘Going Home.’

Nov 18: The Beats of Taiwan

The Ju Percussion Group from Taiwan is a professional band comprised of 17 percussionists, best known for their innovative performances that fuse East and West, traditional and contemporary styles. Having created over 200 pieces, the Ju Percussion Group, founded by famous Taiwanese percussionist Ju Tzong-Ching, has toured the globe and brought their powerful performances to nearly 30 countries.

Nov 18: Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc

The French film Les Choristes has made this children’s choir famous worldwide – or rather, they’ve made the film world-renowned. They are the Little Singers of Saint Marc, who provided vocals for the film’s soundtrack. From church choir to movie scores, the Little Singers’ performances have been applauded by audiences in churches, concert halls and music festivals around the world.

Nov 23: Kodály Quartet

The Hungarian string instrumentalists of Kodály Quartet are renowned the world over, not least of which for their recordings of the complete cycles of Beethoven, Hayden and Schubert. The gifted foursome has been active in the classical music world for more than 50 years and, although they have seen members come and go, the troupe is regarded as ambassadors of Hungary’s classical music heritage. See the celebrated quartet as they perform Beethoven this month at the Guangzhou Opera House.

Nov 24: Jay-Jay Johanson

Characterized by jazzy vocals over trippy, film noir arrangements, Jay-Jay Johanson’s debut album, Whiskey, became an instant hit when released in 1996. But the Swedish singer-songwriter’s 2007 album, The Long Term Physical Effects Are Not Yet Known, is recognized by many fans as his finest offering, being more seductive and startlingly eclectic than any of his prior work. Starting his world tour in China, Johanson is slated to visit more than 30 cities around the globe.

Huang Yu, Su Qianjun and Sun Xiaoxiao all majored in mineral color painting at the Chinese Painting College of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art and will have their beautiful artwork displayed at this exhibition. Because the materials and techniques used in mineral color painting are quite unique, the artists became enamored by the craft during their studies. In their works, viewers will see the three artists’ passion for nature, commitment to art and their love of life.

Nov 29: Vienna Philharmonic & Lang Lang Classical Music

Chinese pianist Lang Lang, who is recognized as the world’s youngest ‘piano master,’ is no stranger to the realm of classical music. He was the first Chinese pianist to be employed by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and some of the most storied symphony orchestras in the US. In concert with the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Lang will perform in what is certainly the biggest classical music event happening in Guangzhou this year.

Dec 1: 15th Annual Guangzhou Santa Pub Crawl

You better watch out, you better not cry, you better get tipsy, we’re telling you why, the Santa Pub Crawl is coming in town! This year’s Santa Pub Crawl will take place on Saturday, December 1, and take attendees to a minimum of four venues via chartered buses. The 2018 edition of the Guangzhou Santa Pub Crawl will leave from the Paddy Field Irish Pub at 7.30pm sharp. The rest of the itinerary is a closely guarded secret, although we can attest: this year’s boozy roster is an all-star lineup.
