Guangdong Dance Festival takes performance to the streets

This November, the Guangdong Dance Festival (GDDF) celebrates its 10th anniversary. Stemming from humble roots, over the space of a decade it has become one of the most important dance events in China, evolving from a sideline of the Guangdong Modern Dance Company to a government-funded and supported endeavor. Where once it was more of an in-the-know platform for artists to communicate with one another, in recent years the annual gala has made great strides towards involving the Guangzhou population at large, while simultaneously raising its profile by inviting exciting international troupes and supporting rising local talents.

Taking even greater strides into the community, this year sees the GDDF stage two dance carnivals on November 10 and 16, jam-packed with performances that are completely open to all. “Modern dance can be performed not just in theaters, but also in public area,” explains Director of GDDF Karen Cheung. “More than 25 shows will be staged on exotic Shamian Island, all for free.”

As well as these public performances, Grandview Plaza, the Garden Hotel and TaiKoo Hui are also holding gratis shows. Forums and classes are taking place in tandem for the duration of the festival, which runs November 9 to 16.
