May 8-12: W Fashion Week
Fashion brands and up-and-coming designers will exhibit their creative collections at W Fashion Week. Themed 'Futuristic Wave,' this year's edition will bring an infusion of metallic artificial hair, dresses that dispense actual cocktails, accordion-like protective headgear and outfits that would fit right in on an alien spaceship. May 9: Idea Exchange
Idea Exchange embraces arts, science and music on the second Tuesday of every month. This week’s speaker Jay McCann will focus on post-War American jazz from bebop to jazz fusion. This was a period when great innovators such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Frank Zappa pushed the genre in new directions. A staffer at the American Consulate here in Guangzhou, McCann has played guitar with several jazz bands and also performed in theatre, including a theatrical adaptation of Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

May 10: Turkish Airlines World Golf Cup Amateur Series
“The globe’s biggest corporate amateur tournament” is to take place at Guangzhou Royal Orchid Golf International Golf Club once again on May 10. This tournament, consisting of 100 Qualifying Series events in 63 countries, will gather 100 corporate winners from each qualifying contest at the final in Turkey.

May 13: Shanghai Restoration Project
Following their 2015 The Classics Tour, The Shanghai Restoration Project, a trio founded by Emmy Award-winning musician Dave Liang, return to China this May to promote their latest release: Life Elsewhere. It’s an album that weaves jazz, electronica, samba, bossa nova and world music with Chinese Taoist philosophy. The band will be joined by jazz guitarist Zhang Xiongguan.

May 13: Chili Cook-off at McCawley’s
If last year's event is any indication, McCawley's Chili Cook-off will undoubtedly be one of the year’s most memorable culinary events. There is no entry fee to participate and sampling the goods is a measly RMB100 and includes drink vouchers, nacho chips and salsa, cornbread, a voting slip and a chance at the lucky draw. Oh, and you get to eat a pile of chili!
Tasting and voting starts at noon and prizes will be awarded at 3pm! To register a team of chili cooks – or get your hands on some presale tasting tickets – message Tait from McCawley’s in Guangzhou (WeChat ID: taitchina). For those interested in participating in the cooking portion of the event, please take note: Tuesday at 6pm is the deadline for registration (late registration may still be accepted, but laggards will have no say in how their mince is prepared).

May 13: Global Friendship High Tea Charity
Global Friendship is raising money for its 'Educate a Child' program, which helps impoverished students in Guizhou province reach their fullest potential. These primary school students study and live in the mountain hill tops of Kongnai village. Global Friendship began a lunch program in October 2016 to raise lunch money for 23 students for six months. The goal of this charity event is to raise a total of RMB 8,096 to complete the lunch goal for the summer of 2017. Also in this event, treat yourself to beautiful afternoon of tea or coffee, free flow of sparkling wine and a buffet of finger foods, as well as a fun weaving workshop, while also supporting charity.

May 9 will see Victory Day celebrated across Russia. In Guangzhou, the Russian chef at Arbat will serve some delicious Russian treats. Spend over RMB50 and get an 8-inch beef and potato pie for RMB1.

May 13-31: Maï Lucas Photography Exhibition
A French photographer who captures the look of youth on streets around the world, Maï Lucas previously worked as an assistant of visionary British photographer Nick Knight before branching off to pursue her own style. Prior to this exhibition, she undertook a several-week-long residency in China to meet and photograph young Chinese people and familiarize herself with their lifestyle.

May 14: Sunday Brunch at Open
Come relish a seafood buffet brunch at Open, with a delicious offering of caviar, Scottish oysters, grain-fed Australian beef (which means more marbling and a smoother texture), roasted suckling pig, as well as an array of desserts. Or, for a more satisfactory and fun dining experience, try making your own paella or risotto under the guidance of expert in-house chefs. A cookie-making class will also be offered to the little ones.
