The Strand Beer Café, open every day from 6.30pm till late, can be found down an alleyway of a side street off Guangzhou Dadao Zhong.

Manager David Strand, hailing from America’s 'biggest little city in the world,' Reno, is an advocate of quality beer and three years ago began to brew his own concoctions. With just him and his wife Xurry manning the pumps they are somewhat understaffed, yet that’s testament to their soaring popularity, acquired in just three months.

Their selection of brews on offer would make an alcoholic god envious: Rocky Mountain Pale Ale 5.8% (RMB35), Xurry's Porter 5.4% (RMB35), American Farmhouse Ale 5.6% (RMB35) and Wuyang IPA 6.0% (RMB35). All are home-brewed by Dave at a garage in Haizhu that doubles as a brewery and produces a modest 80 liters (around three kegs) a day.

Dave’s B’s Best Belgian 7.9% (RMB45) was a favorite of mine, smooth; strong; like intoxicating nectar.

They also have the blue-capped Trappistes Rochefort (10) (RMB55). An 11.3% reddish brown Belgian quad that gives sweet dark fruit tones, like those of raisins and cherries, and is heavy but not at all cloying. It’s consistently ranked in the top 10 beers in the world.

To top things off, they serve the perfect sustenance to soak up some of that beer: freshly made 8-inch pizzas, which they’re promoting via their Friday pizza night. One topping and a draft beer for RMB50 is a tasty bargain.
