Former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is eyeing up one of his most prized former players to join his current side, Chinese Super League's Guangzhou R&F.

The Swede expressed desire to sign Frank Lampard following the midfielder's release from Chelsea this year, even predicting the 35-year-old would be a hit in China.

"I have suggested to the club they take Frank Lampard," confirmed Eriksson. "He would be great in China, he is a football man, very proud and clever so if he thinks he can go on for another year or two, he will not go just for a holiday."

"How many midfielders in the world have scored more goals than Lampard? He is still running, still scoring."

Talking to reporters, Eriksson said he had already recommended Chelsea's all-time leading goalscorer to his superiors, but there was one giant hurdle in the way of getting Lampard on board.

"I have spoken to agents about it but the money is through the roof so I am not sure it can happen," Eriksson said on trying to match Lampard's 1.5 million yuan ($252,000) weekly salary.

With an offer already on the table from MLS team New York City FC, Lampard, who is in the England Squad for the World Cup, has said he will wait until after the tournament to make a decision about his career.

Guangzhou R&F are currently placed 3rd on the Chinese Super League table, and look on course to qualify for the Asian Champions League.

Following 13 years at Stamford Bridge, it seems uncertain how Lampard would cope with a move to the PRD, especially considering the shambles witnessed by other high-profile footballers who have played in the CLS.

Many commentators have dismissed Eriksson's hopes as mere fantasy, with one netizen saying it's equally likely Lampard would sign for his Saturday team.
