The man who set off several home-made bombs outside the Communist Party headquarters in Taiyuan, Shanxi province, killing one person, has been sentenced to death, Xinhua reports.
42 year old Feng Zhijun admitted to planting nine devices outside the building on November 6 last year, and was sentenced on Friday. He will not appeal to a higher court, a statement from the Taiyuan Intermediate People's Court said.
The Taiyuan native, who had previously served nine years in jail for theft, planned the attack after his petitions failed to prevent a series of demolition orders at his home.
He set bombs in at least two locations outside the building, injuring a further 17 people on top of the fatal casualty.
When he was apprehended by police two days after the bombings, Feng admitted to his crimes, claiming he was taking "revenge on society".
The case mirrors several other incidents in recent years where petitioners have taken action in reaction to the government's lack of response to their personal grievances.
In July 2013, a wheelchair bound man set off a home-made bomb at Beijing Capital International Airport. He said he was paralysed after a beating by security officers (chengguan). He began petitioning after losing lawsuits against the government, but claims these were ignored. He was sentenced to six years imprisonment for the bombing.
In 2012, a suicide bomber in Qiaojia county, Yunnan province killed three bystanders and injured 16 in protest of the seizure of his home by the local government.
