The year 2025 marks two poignant milestones in the world of 20th-century music: the 150th anniversary of Maurice Ravel’s birth and the 50th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich’s passing. But beyond this coincidence in time, the deeper connection between these two musical giants lies in their shared emotional gravity.

Ravel, shaped by the fading glow of the Belle Époque and the brutality of the battlefield, and Shostakovich, caught in the grip of a repressive regime, never met in person. Yet their piano trios are frequently paired in recordings and concert halls, as if they were musical twins born of the same anguished world. The architecture of their music reveals striking parallels—unforgettable sorrow threaded through haunting melodies and a burning intensity that lies just beneath the surface.

In the haze of history and memory, what did they hope to express to us through music?

These two monumental works will be brought to life by Trio Orelon, a rising international chamber ensemble founded in Cologne, Germany in 2019. Despite their youth, they have already garnered prestigious accolades, including the Gold Prize in the Piano Trio category at the 2023 ARD International Music Competition, First Prize and Special Prize for Best Performance of the Commissioned Work at the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, and top honors at Schubert and Modern Music in Graz.

2025 marks their debut tour in China—an unmissable moment to witness a brilliant ensemble at the height of its rising trajectory.
