Former Ming Pao editor Kevin Lau, who was attacked with a knife in the street last week, has left intensive care and moved to a private ward Saturday.
Lau's wife, Vivien Chan, said her husband's wounds, which have damaged crucial nerves in his legs, were "deep and serious".
"He will have to undergo a prolonged programme of physiotherapy and other rehabilitation. It will not be an easy recovery," Chan said.
Though he did not respond to reporters questions, Lau gave an OK sign as he was being wheeled to his new ward.
Lau was attacked as he left his car in San Wan Ho around 10:30am on Wednesday. Police described the incident as a "classic triad hit", in which a passenger riding on the back of a motorcycle jumped off and slashed at Lau from behind.
Meanwhile, the 22 year old daughter of Hong Kong chief executive CY Leung sparked anger online, as the SCMP reports:
The remark by Leung Chai-yan - a London School of Economics law student - on Thursday drew more than 3,000 comments by yesterday, some of them abusive.
The Chief Executive's Office said it would not comment.
"What does the attack have anything [sic] to do with press freedom?! Come on people," Leung wrote on her Facebook page, a day after the attack.
Her father had "strongly condemned" the attack and spoke of respect for press freedom.
Earlier, she wrote: "I don't think you need an expert analyst to know that. Lol," referring to a report quoting police as saying the attack aimed to send a message to Lau rather than kill him.
Thousands of Hongkongers left messages condemning her remarks. But Leung fired back on Friday: "Haters gonna hate."
