Two more arrests have been made in connection with the brutal attack on former Ming Pao editor Kevin Lau last month.
A 55 year old man and 37 year old woman join nine other suspects already arrested. Two men picked up by police in Dongguan, Guangdong province are believed to be the assailants responsible for the February 26 attack. Both have links to triads. A further seven men were arrested in Hong Kong on Wednesday.
Lau suffered multiple stab wounds to his back and legs after an assailant attacked him with a cleaver in the street and fled the scene by motorbike. Writing about the attack in Ming Pao, Lau said: "Several experienced doctors judged from my wounds that the attacker’s aim was to punish and threaten [me], rather than taking my life".
Some commentators on Twitter linked the attack to worsening press freedom and control in Hong Kong. Lau was ousted last month from his position as Ming Pao editor and his replacement is seen as pro-Beijing.
