This morning, two buses crashed in the New Territories, a region in Hong Kong, injuring 77 passengers onboard.

The collision occurred around 8.20am when one double-decker bus rammed into another near the Tsuen Wan exit of the Tai Lam Tunnel. According to CCTV, the driver and passengers were trapped inside, although it’s not clear whether both vehicles had passengers onboard. A rescue mission was carried out shortly after the crash, with only two people said to have suffered serious injuries.

South China Morning Post reported that vehicles from Kowloon Motor Bus Co. and Citybus were involved in the collision, with 26 ambulances and 15 fire trucks dispatched to the scene. One passenger, surnamed Lai, told SCMP that many of the passengers were asleep at the time of the accident. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Police are currently investigating the cause of the crash.

In February of last year, Hong Kong saw the deadliest accident on city roads in over a decade when 19 people were killed in a double-decker bus crash. Most of the casualties occurred on the upper deck of the bus after the vehicle had overturned and struck a lamppost. After the tragic accident, Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam called for an investigation into public transportation safety.

In the first five months of this year, 43 people have died in 42 traffic accidents in Hong Kong, according to official figures reported by SCMP.
