Booze Banned at Government Events in Guangzhou

Baijiu will no longer be served at (most) official government parties in Guangzhou, according to a report by GRT Radio, as per new rules banning alcohol at official activities.

The ban on boozy government gatherings was recently announced by the Guangzhou Leading Group Office for Improving the Party's Working Style and Building a Clean Government (yet another government department with a ridiculously long name) and is intended to help end corruption and overly-extravagant official events as well as help build a “clean government.”

Under the new rules, the following behaviors will no longer be allowed: using public coffers to purchase and drink alcohol, imbibing booze offered by “any unit or individual” and gifting alcohol purchased with government money.

According to GRT Radio, exceptions can be made in special situations, such as important foreign affairs-related events, although authorization to serve and consume alcohol will need to be applied for and approved.
