PRD residents, if you've looked out the window – or on WeChat for that matter – today, you're well aware that Guangdong and Hong Kong have been hit by epic storms that brought with them flooding and destruction.

South China Morning Post reports that Guangzhou districts Tianhe, Haizhu, Yuexiu and Liwan recorded over five centimeters of rain this morning, prompting a 'response emergency mechanism.'

We hope the mechanism did something for whomever's car this is:

According to a report, the large tree came crashing to the ground near the Guangzhou Dongfeng Hotel in the early hours of the day.

Shenzhen's Futian District seemed to be less affected by the storm, with the expected muddying of construction sites being the most obvious effect.

On the other side of the administrative border, at 11.30am, the Hong Kong Observatory issued a cool-sounding 'black rainstorm warning,' their highest level of rain alert.

Not so cool was the heavy downpour that saw roads flood and a China Eastern Airlines plane slide off the runway at the Hong Kong International Airport when landing. Afternoon classes have also been canceled at public schools.

The heavy rains are expected to become showers by tomorrow.
