Black smoke billowed from the first floor of a building under construction in Guangzhou’s Huangpu District this morning, frightening passersby and prompting the dispatch of several fire engines.

It is reportedly the four time the building, which is a property of the Guangzhou Port Company in Huangpu, has caught fire since its construction began.

"I work in the vicinity and this is the fourth fire since last year, although the previous few times were not so big,” a Mr. Liao, who first spotted the smoke after exiting the Yuzhu Metro Station, told reporters.

According to Tencent News, the smoke was first reported at 7.40am and was still rising from the building’s first floor at 8am. The Huangpu Fire Department did not answer our calls for comment and it is currently unclear what exactly caught fire.
