On January 30, Shanghai resident Ms. Sun discovered roughly RMB250,000 was missing from her bank account. According to her WeChat transaction record, her hard-earned money was gradually transferred to ‘Tencent’, a few thousands at a time.
After being continuously questioned, her 13-year-old daughter, Sue, begrudgingly admitted she spent the money to buy gifts for a live-streaming host named Yang Guang.
With a combined monthly income of less than RMB10,000, what Sue spent within two months was nearly all of Ms. Sun and her husband’s entire savings.
“She lives with us the entire time, she’s always been a good girl. We’re both busy with work, but we never neglected her. We’re both shocked that this would happen,” said Ms. Sun who called the police to try and get her money back. However, she didn't blame her daughter entirely. “She’s aware of how serious this is now, but she still doesn't want talk about it - I mean, who told her to do this?”
The live-streaming app Sue sent money to is mostly comprised of hosts singing on their personal channels and asking for gifts from fans. Unfortunately, police say their hands are tied since Sue purchased the gifts and gave them voluntarily; legally speaking there was no fraud involved.
