We’re getting used to hearing about high-priced auction sales. Just last week we reported on how Da Dong owner, Dong Zhenxiang, shelled out a whopping RMB772,000 (USD112,000) for a giant white truffle at an Italian auction.

This time around three Chinese paintings sold for RMB663 million (USD96 million) at an auction in Beijing on Sunday, China Daily reports.

The most prized work of the evening was a classical Chinese painting entitled Five Drunken Kings Return on Horses. The two-meter-long scroll sold for RMB303 million, the highest amount paid for a single Chinese work of art this year. The artist’s name was Ren Renfa, who was a high-ranking official during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). At the time, Ren was regarded as a master of painting animals, especially horses.

The painting formerly belonged to a German collector named Walter Hochstadter (1914-2007). Following his death, his family sold the painting for RMB41 million at a Christie’s auction.
