Expats Over 60 Can Now Get a Shanghai Work Permit... Sort of

Great news for foreigners over the age of 60 that are interested in receiving an employment permit to work in Shanghai... if you're a senior executive at a large corporation, that is.

Shanghai Municipal Committee official Hu Zhangping says that some senior 60+ execs have been unable to apply for Shanghai residence permits, so here's to helping them out:

"We can allow those foreign managers over 60 to apply for a foreign expert certificate. The age limitation can be broaded to 70," says Hu.

Seems like a pretty limited segment to us, but if the need is there...

As of last June, Shanghai expats were allowed to apply for permanent residence permits if they had lived in the city for four years or more and were in a high tax bracket. (This also applied to any 'personal servants' of the applicants.)

During this period, green card restrictions were also lifted for foreign deputy professors, researchers or other professions that had worked for 3-4 years in China, lived in China for three of those years and had good tax records.

The reason for all the allowances? China's State Council says the need for 'skilled immigration' in China is 'imminent'.
