A 53-year-old Guangzhou man made local news yesterday for building an impressive miniature replica of the city’s iconic Canton Tower. The man, referred to as Mr. Chen by QQ News, is employed as a company driver and spends his spare time creating handmade paper models – something he is clearly very adept at.
To build his Canton Tower replica, Chen rolled sheets of paper to pre-planned diameters to create the spider web of ‘beams’ that make up the exterior of the mini-structure. To help strengthen the paper beams, the craftsman installed copper wire inside each roll of paper.
A blue light was also added to give the structure its signature ‘nighttime look.’
Chen had no blueprints for the project and formulated the model's design from browsing images on the Internet. Going forward, Chen told reporters he hopes to add some tiny trees and shrubbery at the base of his model to make it look “more real.”
Understandably, this miniature Canton Tower has received a fair bit of attention from curious tourists and locals visiting the actual tower, where Chen has taken his creation for some innovative photo shoots.
Hats off to Chen. We can’t wait to see what he dreams (read: rolls) up next!
