What does it take to transform into a hero? Not vigorous training or the wave of wand, but eating a Snickers bar, if recent Chinese Snickers commercials are to be believed.
In line with Snickers' global slogan ("You are not you when you're hungry"), these commercials capture exactly that. Some of these spots have been popular for years, but somehow we failed to pick them up on our radar until now.
Up first is this 2012 commercial, where a hungry and tired girl is shown leaning on a boy's shoulder for support while they climb up a mountain. She acts delicate and weak like a dying heroine in Korean soap opera (perhaps she's been binge-watching Korean soaps). Having none of this nonsense, one of the hikers hands her a Snickers bar, which magically turns her into one of the guys. (Mild sexist undertones, much?)
In the 2014 version, Rowan Atkinson of "Mr. Bean" fame is depicted as a clumsy misfit with weak knees... who also happens to be on a mission to attack Chinese assasins. After downing a Snickers bar, he is immediately transformed into an agile martial arts master.
A similar storyline is followed in the most recent ad, released earlier this year. The 2016 version depicts a Chinese imperial concubine becoming a basketball player after a Snickers-induced transformation.
