Jan 13-14: Jeff Lorber Fusion @ Blue Note Beijing

201701/lorber-poster.jpg

American jazz composer Jeff Lorber earned a Grammy nomination for his 2007 album He Had a Hat (released on Blue Note Records, which is of no relation the jazz club where he makes his Beijing appearance). The keyboardist’s band, The Jeff Lorber Fusion, broke onto the scene in the late 1970s, with their 1980 album Wizard Island introducing the world to an up-and-coming young saxophonist named Kenneth Bruce Gorelick – better known as Kenny G.

Fri Jan 13-Sat Jan 14, from 6pm; RMB280-RMB520 (purchase presale tickets here); Blue Note Beijing, see event listing.

The 5th China Folk Festival is currently touring around the Mainland. And it’ll be making a stop right here in Beijing on Saturday. There’s going to be a solid lineup of bands, including the Frogs, Robella, Dimo, Tea Season and Via. The theme of this year’s fest is “Spring Ballads.” We’re not exactly sure what that means, but we are sure that this is a must-be-at event for folk-music lovers. We’re told that some performers are still being finalized so make sure to check the finalized lineup for yourself.

Sat Jan 14 4.30pm-midnight. RMB100 (presale)/RMB120 (door). Beijing Music Space 7 Banqiao Lane, Dongsi Beida Jie Renmei North Building, 1st Floor ,东四北大街板桥南巷7号人美大厦北楼一楼

Jan 15: Split Works Presents Vieux Farka Touré

farka1.jpg

Often dubbed the 'Hendrix of the Sahara,' Vieux Farka Touré faces huge expectations every time he steps on stage. As the son of Mali music legend Ali Farka Touré, he’s used to it. But Vieux has crafted his own musical identity by taking his father’s template and adding contemporary influences, from rock to dub, into the mix. He’s collaborated with the likes of Israeli singer-songwriter Idan Raichel, American indie singer Julia Easterlin and alternative rock star Dave Matthews. With a new album scheduled for April, Vieux promises the best has yet to come. Check him out at Yugong Yishan on Sunday night.
