Wal-Mart to Invest USD25 Million in Food Safety Research in China

Finally, there is good news in the world of Beijing food safety. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is investing USD25 million over five years in food safety research in China. The massive investment will support projects in the applied sciences, as well as food safety education.

Wal-Mart hopes to bring together farmers, suppliers, retailers and policy-makers to improve food safety in China and to develop solutions for China’s food supply chain. Wal-Mart has struggled for years to appeal to Chinese markets, and this new commitment signals its dedication to global expansion.

This couldn’t come at a better time. Because as far as food-safety scandals go, we’ve heard it all – eight-legged genetically modified chickens, 40-year-old frozen meat being resold in Beijing supermarkets and, just last month, fish caught from public parks being sold outside the Hujialou subway.

Great. Either way, we’ve seen some things. And we’ve eaten some things, too.
