Guangzhou R&F vs Beijing Guo'an

The highlights reel for Beijing’s trip to Guangzhou (below) features two of the easiest saves that R&F’s goalkeeper Liu Dianzuo will make this season. This is perhaps the most telling sign of what a truly turgid game this was. (But we would also have accepted: the fact that the two sides could muster only three shots on-target during the whole game.)

The closest either team came to scoring came after just seven minutes, when Guangzhou’s Nigerian striker Aaron Olanare saw his looping header bounce off the top of the crossbar. If the smattering of fans at the Yuexiushan Stadium had known that this was the best goal-scoring opportunity the game would provide, they would have been excused for making their way home.

The scant reward for those that stayed included a Dejan Damjanović chance spurned over the bar from 15 yards. R&F supporters enjoyed a little more action, thanks to two chances from Jiang Ning. The first was kept out by an athletic save from Guo’an’s otherwise idle keeper, Yang Zhi, while the second rebounded off the post and out of play.

But while the performance gives little weight to Beijing’s title hopes, the point will surely help. Guo’an now sit alongside Shandong Luneng and reigning champions Guangzhou Evergrande – all of whom have 26 points – at the top of the CSL.
