Special Surprises at Zee-Ai Plant-Based Chef’s Menu at Tomatito

Newly voted Spanish Restaurant of the Year at the That's Shanghai Food & Drink Awards 2020Tomatito was the fourth stop on our Calorie Challenge. The Challenge has seen us team up with Zee-Ai and five chefs in five different restaurants, who are tasked with created healthy eating chef menus.

High protein, zero cholesterol and low saturated fat, Zee-Ai plant-based meat is a dream for chefs to incorporate into their dishes. Three successful events had already been held at Green FridayJing Alley and Hungry Lung's Kitchen, with diners commenting on how good Zee-Ai tastes, as well as how much the plant-based meat looks like animal meat.

As the newly crowned Chef of the Year at the Food & Drink Awards, the pressure was on our fourth host, Tomatito's Koen Vessies, and he did not disappoint his 50 guests, with a sexy tapas menu and special final surprise for diners that got the crowd oohing and aahing!

Let's start at the beginning (and bear in mind that all of the following came for the unbelievable price of RMB128). The evening kicked off with a glass of cava or a soft drink...

... followed by porcini mushroom, plant-based beef and spinach mini tacos...

... "two fingers one bite" plant-based meat explosion, granny smith apple and smoked chili jelly...

... thin sliced eggplant, black truffle, plant based Wagyu, sea salt and fresh tomato...

... "huevos Rotos con Chorizo" organic fried eggs, plant-based chorizo sausages and crispy potatoes...

... and finally, a vegan dry paella with artichokes, rosemary and smoked paprika, cooked and presented traditional Spanish style in a huge pan, without a doubt the most photographed dish of the night!

Guests were big fans and marked down their scores in creation/taste, presentation and service categories, while diners won pasta prizes in a lucky draw!
