Jan 24: Quorum Ballet: Rite of Spring
Igor Stravinsky's ballet, The Rite of Spring, made waves when it debuted
in Paris in 1913 thanks to its outrageous costumes, experimental
choreography and story centered on pagan sacrifice. Cutting-edge modern
dance troupe Quorum Ballet from Portugal reinterprets the show for the
21st century in this performance.

Jan 25: Ara Malikian
Ara Malikian began studying the violin at an early age, and gave his first concert when he was 12 years old. As a Lebanese-born Spanish violinist of Armenian descent, his music embraces elements from cultural traditions in the Middle East as well as South America. He’s played in numerous world-renowned music halls including Carnegie Hall and Salle Pleyel and is arriving in Shanghai for a concert this week.

Jan 25: Actress
Co-founder of the well-respected Werkdiscs label, electronic producer
Actress deals in what's been called "Afro-futuristic sounds of all
persuasions," spanning everything from techno to ambient to R&B.
Catch his set at ALL in promotion of his new album AZD, with Shanghai
producer GOOOOOSE doing a live set in support.

Jan 26: A Long Lunch with Greg Ritchie
The Camel hosts renowned Australian cricket player Greg Ritchie, who’s affectionately known as ‘Fat Cat’ due to his burly build, for a lunchtime talk this Friday. Over a three-course roast lunch and 4.5 hours of free flow Australian wines and beer, Richie will recount his time as a star player during the 80s.

Jan 26: Shade Seoul
Shade Seoul is a collective of DJs and drag performers who make up the
city's most forward-thinking LGBT club night. One of Shade's founders,
LIGRYE, brings his mix of Afrobeats, ballroom and experimental world
rhythms to Shanghai alongside fellow Seoul DJs Seesea and Net Gala, drag
performer Charlotte Goodenough and vogue dancer Naquan Earp. Don't miss
this major queer-friendly club night.

Jan 26: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
NYC
indie pop-rock band The Pains of Being Pure at Heart come to Shanghai,
where they first performed back in 2012. Known for their upbeat and
emotionally resonating songs, the band dropped their well-received
fourth album, The Echo of Pleasure, this past fall. Check out our interview with the band here.

Jan 27: Joey Bada$$
Brooklyn-born
rapper Joey Bada$$ is a founding member of hip-hop crew Pro Era and is
known for his smart and socially-aware raps. He studied to be an actor
before launching his rap career, and his second full-length album,
ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$, dropped in April of last year to much acclaim.

Jan 27: Shinedoe
Originally from Nigeria and now based in Amsterdam, DJ and producer
Shinedoe deals in cozy, Afro-influenced house and techno. Having
performed at major clubs like Berghain as well as festivals around the
world, she makes her way to China for the first time this month.

Jan 28: DKNSTRKT Launch Event
China-based genderfluid drag collective DKNSTRKT, who focus on workshops
and shows rather than contests to create a more inclusive
‘drag-for-all’ approach, launch their first event this weekend. Head
there for drag performances from Erica and Cocosanti, plus a drag makeup
workshop by performers Fantasia Valentina, Dorian T. Fisk and Momo.
This event also features the premiere of ‘Extravaganza,’ a short film
about Shanghai’s drag community by Matthew Baren and Will Dai.

Jan 28: Gong Gong Gong with Simon Frank + Absolute Purity
Yuyintang hosts a unique trio of bands, including Beijing’s Gong Gong Gong, who have a deconstructed and psychedelic take on blues and folk. Also on the roster are electronic musician Simon Frank, who makes "unhinged minimal synthesizer music" and Shanghai post-punk quartet Absolute Purity (pictured).
