Mes amis; news from the world of fine dining. Celebrity Chef Pierre Gagnaire, a Frenchman studded with 17 Michelin stars at time of writing, has opened his first Chinese mainland restaurant inside the new Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li estate.

Befitting of its stately surrounds, the restaurant is called 'Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire,' which broadly translates to 'Pierre Gagnaire's Bar.' As you can imagine, it's a super casual, soup and sandwich sort of place.

70 seats. A menu filled with contemporary French luxury.

Caviar, oysters, more caviar, roasted lamb legs with the little white hats on the end for dainty eating with fingers! Ah, how the other half live.

Though the menu is designed by Gagnaire himself, in the kitchen is up-and-coming French chef Romain Chapel (below) who has a most interesting background story.
His père was a Monsieur Alain Chapel (below left), a man remembered as one of France's most impressive chef prodigies, one of the creators of nouvelle cuisine whose Lyon restaurant La Mere Charles leapt from one to three Michelin stars in just six years, and who also trained the young Pierre Gagnaire.
After the death of Chapel Sr., Chapel the younger resumed his father's culinary mantel, became the protégé of Chef Gagnaire (below), and now finds himself Executive Chef of Le Comptoir, thus continuing his father's lineage.

Anyway, should you find your taste buds tickled by this tale of fine taste, Le Comptoir is now accepting reservations for dinner and drinks at the bar (below), and will be open for breakfast and afternoon tea in future. Also on the cards is a bakery, and chef's table situation called 'The Lab,' which will offer degustation menus that we can only presume will make the late Alain Chapel proud.
