Lost Bakery: Great Bread, Good Coffee, Plentiful Laptop Space

Lost Heaven. You probably know them for their Thai/Yunnan food, served in exotic, vaguely pre-game appropriate restaurants. But in recent times, the veteran F&B group has spread their seed, so to speak, with the opening of Lost Heaven Silk Road (an all-encompassing group hug of cuisine from along the Silk road), and the brand new Lost Bakery

We'll start with how the place looks, not because that's necessarily the best part, but it is an important one. In a nutshell, this place is a gorgeous haven for the Laptop Brigade. Who? Those people, myself occasionally included, who work on laptops in cafés with forthcoming WiFi and plentiful seating near power outlets (though our own Lauren Hogan tells us those fill up pretty quickly).

Extra spacious interiors, quiet, hopefuly intellect-inducing jazz, vintage looking furniture, high ceilings and a generally tranquil vibe make this the kind of place you'd want to hang out in all damn day. And paying RMB18 for a very decent cup of espresso, you could very well do just that.

Venture into the realm of carbs, and the prices climb just a little bit higher. Think RMB8 for fresh and expertly crafted breads (baguettes are particularly good, but take your chances on the tasty-looking blue cheese and bacon rolls), or RMB30 and up for patisserie (the red domed strawberry 'cheesecake' is our favorite).

They don't yet have a perfectly flakey, splinteringly crisp pastry for their croissants or Danishes yet, but in terms of buttery flavor they suffice.

All in all, this is a good bakery, and a great hang out spot that you should definitely go to next time you need to set up shop for a few hours, just you and your laptop. And if you're staying the whole day, you could even find yourself stopping for savory options at the newly opened foodhall, More Than Eat, next door. More on that one in the coming weeks.
