Aug 2: The Secret Life of Pets

The Secret Life of Pets

Louis C.K. voices Max, an adorable terrier living large in Manhattan who is driven to jealousy when his owner adopts a new dog called Duke (Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet). However, Max’s quest to rid the home of his new competitor leads to the unlikely pair being lost on the streets, desperately trying to make it home. Comedy stars like Kevin Hart, Steve Coogan, Dana Carvey, Hannibal Buress and Albert Brooks voice a colorful cast of characters ranging from vengeful white rabbits to wise basset hounds. Released last month, The Secret Life of Pets has received strong reviews and has already grossed over USD145 million worldwide.

This popular motivational speaker tells his amazing story of living with Phocomelia – a disorder characterized by the absence of legs and arms but only two small deformed feet. World-renowned ballet stars from across the globe converge onto Shanghai Grand Theatre for this annual gala programme co-organized by acclaimed choreographer, Patrick de Bana. The show also features the premiere performance of Shanghai Ballet’s brand new production of The Rite of Spring.

Aug 4: Catching The Sun

Green Drinks screens this documentary following unemployed American workers seeking new opportunities through a solar jobs training program. A wide range of characters from a Chinese solar entrepreneur to a Tea Party activist share their thoughts as the U.S. attempts to build a clean energy economy. A short discussion follows the film.

Aug 4: Homeboy Sandman

Shanghai’s top seggae-fusion band are consistently one of the most crowd-pleasing acts in the city. They're taking over the sophisticated confines of The Pearl for what promises to be an epic dance party.

Three beloved stories by award-winning children’s author Eric Carle come to life on stage in a show mixing fanciful puppets and black light that will tickle the audience’s imagination, regardless of age.

Aug 6: Marfox

The latest instalment of the 云CLOUD party series is headlined by the Portuguese producer spearheading a new sound from Lisbon’s housing estates that has been dubbed ‘batida’ or ‘batacuda.’ The extreme sound mixes African influenced dance styles like kuduro, kizomba, funana and tarraxinha with house and techno.

Aug 6-7: Magic Piano & The Chopin Shorts

Chopin’s music comes alive in this concert that features live piano performed by Derek Wang accompanied by Oscar winning animated shorts originally scored by Lang Lang. The concert tells the story of Anna, her cousin, their magical flying piano and their journey across Europe to find her father. Suitable for ages five and up.

Aug 6-27: National Theatre Live

This initiative to bring the finest in West End Theatre around the world has been a hit, including in Shanghai where shows routinely sell out. Each show is carefully filmed in front of a live audience before being screened in theaters globally. This month features: A View from the Bridge (Aug 6) – a three-time Olivier Award winning show penned by Arthur Miller and starring The Imitation Game’s Mark Strong; Frankenstein (Aug 7&20) – directed by Slumdong Millionaire’s Danny Boyle and starring Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch and Trainspotting’s Jonny Lee Miller; The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime (Aug 13) – a seven-time Olivier Award winner in 2013; and Othello (Aug 27) starring Olivier Award winners Adrian Lester (Hustle) and Rory Kinnear (James Bond: Skyfall).

Until Aug 7: Slide the City

Since launching in Salt Lake City two years ago, this massive block party has toured more than 100 cities and will make its Asian debut. The Shanghai edition features a slide that organizers are promising will be the “length of a 60-storey building.” On-site vendors will provide food and drink options while DJs supply the entertainment, adding to the festive vibe.

Aug 12: Hiromi Uehara

The Japanese pianist has won a Grammy for her work with the Stanley Clarke Band and has recorded a two-disc live album with the iconic Chick Corea. She’s showing off her compositional chops leading her acclaimed Trio project featuring guitarist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips who have recorded with the likes of Steely Dan to Judas Priest.

This show is a pre-festival showcase for the Split Works curated Concrete + Grass Festival, going down in September.

The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon has revived interest in the long-running art of pretending to sing. The Pearl has organized this competition to see which faux-singer is the best in Shanghai. M2 welcomes the Dutch electronic music superstar that has scored worldwide clubbing hits for two decades from groundbreaking trance anthems to more recent forays into progressive house. Always an innovator, he recently revived his legendary Gouryella project with Tiësto with a goal of converting it to a full stage live show. While the tour will tour festivals across Europe, Corsten will be stopping by M2 to dip into his extensive discography of classics.

The Brooklyn comic has wowed on Conan, starred in recurring vignettes on The Tonight Show and is finishing up an indie comedy-horror film where he stars as a comic who has four jokes to make his captors laugh or die trying. He returns to Shanghai after wowing last summer at Kung Fu Komedy Club.

Aug 20: Huun Huur Tu

Since emerging from the Mongolia-Russian border republic of Tuva over two decades ago, this group has cultivated a global following. Their mix of native sounds like throat singing and instruments like the khomus (Tuvan jaw harp) with Western sounds from rock to electronic music have led to collaborations with music legends (and fans) like Frank Zappa, Ry Cooder and Ravi Shankar.

Yuyintang gets ear-bleedingly loud for the third edition, bringing together some of East Asia’s finest shoegaze acts. The fifth installment in the pre-historic animated series goes into space. The film picks up after the events of 2012’s Ice Age: Continental Drift where saber tooth squirrel Scrat has accidentally activated an alien ship taking him to deep space where he inadvertently sends several asteroids to collide into Earth. Meanwhile on the planet, Ray Romano’s wooly mammoth Manny must rally everyone around him to find a solution to impending doom. Stars Dennis Leary, Queen Latifah and Jennifer Lopez return with new additions including comedy vets (Nick Offerman), pop stars (Jessie J), athletes (Michael Strahan) and a scientist (Neil deGrasse Tyson).

Aug 23: Jason BourneThe trailer for Matt Damon's much anticipated starring role in Zhang Yimou's The Great Wall is out and has been less than well-received (Asian-American actors, "why is there a white man saving Ancient China from aliens?," we ask, "why does the first major Mainland-American film production have such a stupid plot?") Before that, Mainland audiences will be treated to the award-winning star reprise his role as the powerful, yet forgetful, super-spy. Although the Bourne franchise really would be better if it was #starringjohncho.

While the China Super League season hasn’t gone quiet as planned for Shanghai SIPG, the team is among the final eight in Asia’s premier club football tournament. They host South Korean club Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the first game in a home-and-home battle.

Things change so fast in Shanghai but the Xingguo Lu staple has been a reliable supplier of cheap drinks, quality tunes and late night shenanigans. Iconic London label goes head-to-head with homegrown label SVBKVLT in a night that promises to be full of dark, heavy beats. Hyperdub boss Kode 9 is joined by labelmate Scratch DVA (pictured above) while Swimful and Faded Ghost represent Shanghai. Joining in the fun is special guest Hudafunk who is making the trip from London.

Aug 27: Across the Garden Bridge: Art Deco Hongkou

Historic Shanghai explores Hongkou’s hidden Art Deco gems while bringing to life the legends of the city, including a beautiful building with a terrible legacy that still causes people to cross the street rather than pass it. Explore Victor Sassoon’s sprawling Embankment Building, the original Shanghai Foreign Correspondent Club building and other remnants of Hongkou’s rich history.

The monthly techno party hosted by Co:Motion’s MIIA, Room 303, welcomes its biggest booking yet in the house and techno wunderkind that’s currently enchanting the French underground. Emerging from the Clek Clek Boom collective that produced French Fries, Bambanou is now signed to Modselektor’s 50 weapons label where he’s been crushing it with ‘percussive, abstract yet organic techno.’

Aug 27: Dumbfoundead

STD presents the Argentian-born, South Korean rhymer who emerged out of Los Angeles’ fierce battle rap scene. He’s since wowed at global rap championships, toured the world with Korean icons Epik High and counts Drake among his famous fans.

The seventh edition of this Shanghai summer tradition goes down at Jiangwan Stadium boasting a pair of bonafide Mandopop stars headlining in Coco Lee and Jolin Tsai. The Canadian pop punk favorites return to Shanghai after two past sold-out trips. Cracking Art: Animal Landing

Founded in 1993, the six-member artistic collective is devoted to creating eye-popping installations utilizing recycled plastics, exploring the harmonious relationship between humans and nature. Their first tour of China stops off at Xintiandi with 235 animal statues scattered around the area. Bring the little ones and see how many you can find.

China Channel and WalktheChat present the country’s largest WeChat conference for international audiences. The two-day conference is dedicated to all things WeChat featuring a variety of speakers raging from entrepreneurs to video artists, marketing experts to NGOs, united in their innovative use of the platform. The Roman Empire’s second city may have been destroyed by a volcano east of Naples in 79 CE, but this exhibition brings the bustling coastal city back to life. Over 100 artifacts have been collected from the UESCO World Heritage Site that provide a comprehensive glimpse into the city society, conventions, daily life and its last days.

The World of Tim BurtonNo one would ever accuse Tim Burton of lacking style. From Beetlejuice to The Corpse’s Bride, the director/producer/writer/animator has carved out a distinctly dark gothic style that remains highly influential. This massive touring exhibition features over 500 pieces of his work dating back to his childhood bringing visitors deep into his mind, split into nine areas based around a movie theme.
