After hearing about a newly opened skydiving simulator at the The Hub in Hongqiao, it seemed only right that the staff at That's Shanghai give it a whirl. We made sure not to eat too much beforehand...
You will need three pieces of equipment to fly: goggles (indicated in pink), helmet (indicated in orange) and earplugs (indicated in red). Instructors gave a brief lecture outlining some basic information and important safety features, and lead us to do basic physical warm-ups. All this for one short minute of flying. Needless to say, we felt safe in the hands of these "coaches."
Aspiring flyers need not fear; coaches will adjust the strength of the wind depending on personal preference and their evaluation of your physical ability. The coaches will be there at all times to help maintain control, so it is very important to remember the gestures taught earlier.
The combination of a loud fan and ear plugs means that communication is only possible through gestures. The best advice we have? Just keep your flight posture best you can, and relax.
The Hub in Hongqiao has recently invited some professional skydivers to perform stunts such as air skiing and ballet at their simulators, with all performances free to the public. They are also currently running a month-long Sky Life Festival with different activities for both children and adults. Find out more information here.
