Just as it was recovering from a bad bout of orange-level pollution last week, Shanghai was hit by another round of hazardous smog today, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) going beyond 300 in some parts of the city, according to Shanghai Daily.
Issuing a blue alert, the city ordered all schools and kindergartens to suspend outdoor activities and construction activities within the Outer Ring Road, as well as banning vehicles carrying waste from construction sites from entering the roads. The city's Environmental Protection Bureau also "asked housing construction, traffic and other departments to adapt emergency measures to keep road clean and stop works that would increase dust in the air, such as tearing down houses and excavating roads," reports Shanghai Daily.
As of 6pm today, the Real-time Air Quality Reporting System in Shanghai was reporting an AQI of 257, or "crying girl" in the cartoon version of the scale.
This is the second time the city has issued an alert in eight days.
