For over a decade, Bubba’s Chili Cook-Off has become an unlikely anchor of the expat community in Shanghai, one that traces its origins to humble beginnings – a gathering at the Hongqiao branch of Bubba’s Texas Bar-B-Que.
This year’s event marking the 10th anniversary is happening this Saturday, November 7 from 12-8pm, and is set to draw in a big old crowd baying for chili.
2015 Competitors
This year's competition looks to be pretty stiff, with over 20 teams vying for the prize of 'Best Chili.' Here's our roundup of the ones to watch...
Upmarket Mexican favorite and defending champions from last year's Cook-Off, these guys are known for their signature recipe stewed with an enormous beef bone.
Former three-time chili champions, Pistolera's team have their eyes firmly on the prize and are out to regain their former glory. Expect them to bring it and then some.
Louisiana-style kitchen Ruijin Cajun aren't ones to miss a party, nor a cook-off for that matter.
Two Jerks
Cheeky by name... and delicious of chili? We hope for good things from this new WeChat delivery-based Caribbean kitchen.
One of the most energetic teams in the competition, the longstanding Tex-Mex champs are back in the game for another year.
Best known for their chocolate epicenter out in Yangpu, no prizes for guessing what their secret ingredient is.
And in the online grocery corner is Table Life, who have former Liquid Laundry (and previous chili champion) Chef Sean Jorgensen fighting their corner. That ought to be good.
Other competitors include The Rooster, Big Bamboo, Fields China, Mexico Lindo, Rekorderlig Cider, heck – even the NFL China is getting in on the action with their own chili team.
For non-chili vittles and drinks, Bubba's Texas-Style Bar-B-Que, Strictly Cookies, Tito's Vodka, Via Pacifica California Wine, Westwood Ales, Shanghai Pickleback Co. and BYFO Hot Sauce will be on hand to satisfy every whim and necessity.
We're also hearing that this year's event will be more family friendly, with a play area, games, activities and plenty of grassy space for running around in. Music-wise, local bands Rock Suey and Hongkou Tonks are on the lineup. Hoedown optional.
