That's PRD takes a look at the best live performances happening this weekend in Guangzhou:
Thu, Jun 14: Hedgehog @ T:union
Rumors have been adrift about a possible breakup for the legendary Beijing band, but singer and guitarist, Zo, has stated that the threesome have never felt better about their music making ability. That certainly shows on their recently released, and possibly their best, album, Sound of Life Towards. Absolutely be sure to make it to T:union to ride the ebb and flow of Hedgehog’s nostalgic and rip-roaring set, with support provided by Landfills, one of Guangzhou’s best young bands.
Jun 14, 8pm; RMB100 student ticket, RMB130 presale, RMB180 at the door. T:union. Tickets. See event listing.
Thu, Jun 14: Goonam @ SD Livehouse
Goonam, abbreviated from the much longer Goonamguayeyeoridingstella, are an extremely multi-faceted indie pop band originating from Seoul, South Korea. Having previously released a fantastic split alongside LA-based Dengue Fever for Record Store Day in 2016, Goonam have received their fair share of praise worldwide for their unique surf-infused attitude, washed out guitars and trippy melodies. Supporting them on the night are Power Milk, Guangzhou’s own jazz and funk trailblazers.
Jun 14, 8pm; RMB70 presale, RMB90 at the door. SD Livehouse. Tickets. See event listing.
Fri, Jun 15: Sound & Fury @ 191 Space
On the back of a recent vinyl release on Shenzhen-based independent label Boring Productions, Sound & Fury will arrive in Guangdong for a pair of gigs in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Take the opportunity to catch one of China’s first shoegaze bands as they make the trip all the way down from Chengdu to bring you their pleasingly romantic and introspective guitar music.
Jun 15, 8.30pm; RMB60 presale, RMB80 at the door. 191 Space. Tickets. See event listing.
Fri, Jun 15: JackLNDN @ Hangover
While remaining a silky-smooth house producer at heart, JackLNDN has made his name on remixes of songs by the likes of Snoop Dogg, Clean Bandit and Mark Morrison. With the release of his Get Down EP, LNDN combined aspects of tropical house music, which made Kygo a star, and the equally laidback, urbane sensibilities of rhythm and blues, making the combination and resultant sound totally his own in the process.
Jun 15, 10pm; RMB100 presale, RMB120 at the door. Hangover. Tickets. See event listing.
Sat, Jun 16: Cosmospeople @ Mao Livehouse
Hailing from Taipei, Cosmospeople reaffirm the small island’s reputation as a stronghold for music of every form. Ostensibly a pop band, Cosmospeople combine a multitude of influences – such as funk, disco and jazz, to create something altogether different from the prevailing drift of pop music. They are widely praised for the energy and imagination brought to albums like 2017’s ShiNao.
Jun 16, 8.30pm; RMB120 presale, RMB150 at the door. Mao Livehouse. Tickets. See event listing.
Sun, Jun 17: Smelly Rock City @ Hey Rock Bar
Another affiliate of Boring Productions down in Shenzhen, Thin City have made quite a name for themselves in South China recently with a spate of fantastic performances all around Guangdong. While they have only recently released their first double single, Rock City Baishizhou/The Loop, head down to Hey Rock Bar to watch them perform songs which will inevitably make it on an album someday soon. They will perform alongside Rocky Sum of Wellsaid and the mysterious, and quirkily named, Smelly Hoover.
Jun 17, 8pm; RMB50 at the door. Hey Rock Bar. See event listing.
