For those of us not fortunate enough to be escaping to a warm Southeast Asian beach this Chinese New Year, there are a number of events happening around Guangzhou to help you get into the spring-fest spirit.
To help you make the most of Chinese New Year in Guangzhou, we've compiled a list of the best cultural events happening across the city. There is no reason to be jaded in Guangzhou this Spring Festival!
January 23-February 22: Chinese New Year in Chimelong Paradise
Converging from different regions in China, a mixed bag of Spring Festival traditions will be witnessed at Chimelong Paradise tourist resort, which will bring about an enthralling parade of Chinese culture. Lion shows, customary eats, a flower market and varied stalls, featuring traditional Chinese crafts, await your patronage. Chimelong Hotel has launched New Year’s Eve packages starting at RMB2,788, including theme park tickets and hotel accommodation, along with a luxurious dinner banquet.

January 30-February 28: Lantern Festival at Yuexiu Park
With a theme of Journey to the West (a classical Chinese novel featuring a pilgrim journey by a Buddhist monk and his supernatural disciples in the Tang dynasty), the 2016 Lantern Festival at Yuexiu Park combines a stunning variety of lanterns with diverse species of flowers. Consisting of 36 sets of spectacular lanterns and 15 illuminated 3D flowerbeds, the lantern festival will showcase flowers during the day and lanterns at night.

February 4: Guangzhou Flower Market Lighting Ceremony
The lighting ceremony of Guangzhou’s Spring Festival flower markets will be held at Haixinsha Island, along with the launch of the Cantonese opera Red Boat. The lighting ceremony will officially raise the curtain on Guangzhou’s yearly, city-wide flower fair, while Red Boat will be staged in a boat tailored to contain 200 audience members. The boat will tour the Pearl River while the audience watches Red Boat, the opera of a love story, which takes place in the Republic of China (1912-1949).

February 6-28: Floating Flower Market
For decades, Liwan Lake Park has organized a one-of-a-kind celebration during the Chinese Spring Festival. Come watch riverboats, garnished with thousands of flowers, as they make their way through the ornate waterways of the park towards historic Xiguan neighborhoods. Hundreds of lanterns will be on display, as well as live bands and stands selling local snacks. It’s sure to be a stimulating cultural excursion, and admission is free, so why not stop by?

February 22-28: Canton Temple Fair
An annual Chinese New Year tradition, the Canton Temple Fair features acrobatic performances, live music, traditional dances and much, much more. Rather than be contained in one specific venue, the celebration trickles out onto the entirety of Beijing Lu. Head to this historic pedestrian street for a lazy afternoon of window-shopping and take advantage of the free festivities!

Until February 26: Xiaozhou Art Festival
From East to West, traditional to contemporary, hardware to software, tangible to intangible, art crosses boundaries and collides in different fields to inspire new thoughts and opportunities. Centered on this cross-boundary idea, the sixth edition of the Xiaozhou Art Festival embraces numerous forms of art, be it traditional or modern. Exhibitions involve sculpture, new media, hip-hop, lacquer painting and photography, among others. Vintage flea markets and music parties, too, await the artist in you.
